Foreword from Book – “Her Ghost – In the Wind” By Brady

Dear Reader, and Hopefully Fellow Art Lover,

I was born in 1983 in the Mojave Desert. I have vivid memories of sneaking out alone to explore the desert by moonlight. My mother relocated us to Kansas in the early 1990s, and I brought my curiosity and love of nature with me. Rural Kansas not only felt like another place, but another time. Every house we moved into felt haunted and filled with longing.

The prairie is a beautiful and unforgiving landscape. I come from a long line of farmers and Scotch, Irish, and English cowboys. I can’t help but think about the Native people who were devastated and displaced in a tragic and brutal way. Their forced migration left huge swaths of land that hard working immigrants eventually settled, doing their best to build lives in a place of harsh winters, relentless wind, and dry, scorching summers.

I’m not passing judgment on the past, but the Midwest was built on both hardship and sorrow. I feel that energy is a real and tangible thing, just as real as the love, joy, and beauty that exist alongside it. Both truths occupy the same landscape.

My art is a rumination on opposites. There has to be darkness to have light. Beauty and ugliness are two sides of the same coin. I love exploring these ideas visually.

Abandoned homes, schools, hospitals, and forgotten buildings are scattered across the American landscape. I am endlessly fascinated by exploring these spaces and imagining the people and stories that came before me. I feel blessed to create art in these places and leave a piece of myself behind. The contrast of fresh paint on crumbling walls or rusting metal siding is visually satisfying in a way that no other form of art-making has ever been for me.

This book is the culmination of more than ten years spent exploring abandoned buildings, train yards, backroads, and collapsing bridges. I’ve done my best to explain the inspiration behind each mural, but I hesitate to explain too much. Art is a special language because everyone can experience a piece differently. We all bring our own history, culture, and memories to what we see. My goal is to create art that feels undeniable and resonates with anyone willing to spend time with it.

For the past three years, I’ve been asking friends, clients, and strangers about their ghost stories. It started as a way to pass the time while tattooing, but I quickly realized that a surprising number of people have had experiences they can’t easily explain. I was lucky enough to include a few of my favorite stories in this book, and I’m excited to share them with you.

As always, I am humbled and grateful to make a living as an artist. I put my soul into everything I create. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your support.

Much Love,
BRADY
